Ground Zero Development

I don't know if anyone's been following the development of Ground Zero mess. Here's the latest" Gov. Pataki's full-court press to reach a deal with Ground Zero developer Larry Silverstein has hit another hurdle: New Jersey's members on the Port Authority board are balking at the plan, sources said yesterday. Talks between the developer and PA Executive Director Ken Ringler, a Pataki appointee, continued yesterday in hopes of having a deal that could be voted on by the bi-state agency's board at tomorrow's meeting. "The negotiations are ongoing and I think they're reaching an agreement," Pataki said of talks that would shift the Freedom Tower and a fifth building to the PA in exchange for lower rents to Silverstein. But a source familiar with PA Chairman Anthony Coscia's position said the New Jersey appointee is concerned about the agency's financial risk if it takes over the Freedom Tower from Silverstein. "Coscia is working to make sure the memorial is funded and the public interest is protected, instead of another agreement that doesn't equal rebuilding," said a source familiar with the PA chairman's position. New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine also insisted that any deal with Silverstein would have to include funding for the memorial. "It has to be a soundly fiscally responsible plan," Corzine said yesterday. "What's important to me is that it has financial support. The Port Authority has to come out with a strong fiscal position for the future not just for New Jersey, but for New York." Sources in the New York camp say New Jersey's PA members don't have the same pressure to get a deal "because they don't have to live with a hole in the ground." Why does New Jersey have anything to say about this? Well, the fact is that the official owner of Ground Zero is the Port Authority - a public agency created by Congress in 1921 to represent the interests of both New Jersey and New York. Thick books have been written about this unnatural relationship; space here is limited. Suffice it to say that New Jersey got, among other things, the Port Authority to take over a decrepit commuter-rail system as its price for agreeing to the original World Trade Center - and it clearly intends to exact a price this time, too. It's just not clear right now exactly what that price will be.

Corzine's Budget Cuts for Higher Education

A group of college students, protesting proposed cuts to state spending on higher education, crashed the ceremonial swearing-in Monday of Public Advocate Ronald K. Chen. Arriving at Rutgers Law School for the ceremony, Gov. Jon S. Corzine was greeted by chants from about 50 college students upset his proposed budget calls for $169 million in cuts to higher education, which some have said will cause a 31 percent tuition hike at Rutgers. "We all came from meager means," said protester Terrence Pearson, 21, of Newark. "This tax cut is going to take from people who are trying to better themselves." Corzine smiled at them and mouthed a few words before entering the university for the ceremony. The protesters followed and stood silently as they circled the proceedings with their protest posters in full view of Corzine and the other speakers. Afterward Corzine met with the students, telling them he is committed to education and that he didn't propose cutting funds to K-12 and early childhood education. "Ultimately, you will have a chance to decide whether Jon Corzine believes in higher education. You can vote me out in three and a half years," Corzine said. Eddie Beck, one of the students who organized the protest, said he appreciated the governor's time but that "I'm unimpressed, I'm unmoved." Beck, 27, a mathematics student, said he's worried that people won't be able to afford college. "We're pricing out our public education so that it's not affordable," Beck said. Speaking with reporters, Corzine said if any savings are found, higher education cuts would be a priority for restoration. He said higher education was a tough cut but that his budget proposal calls for a $6.3 million increase in financial aid to students. Corzine said he expected the backlash. "I wholly expect when you make tough choices there are going to be people who want to speak for their particular interest, and it's not unreasonable. It's what America's about,"Corzine said. "I'm not walking away, ducking and hiding. I could have come in the back door." Chen, whose ceremony was overshadowed by the protest, was diplomatic. "The budget was a tough budget for tough times," Chen said. "The governor certainly knows that."

"The Simple Life" co-star Nicole Richie has drawn the ire of a Castaic, Calif., family for asking an 11-year-old boy a lewd question. The youth was playing basketball in his driveway Wednesday when Richie, taping a "The Simple Life 4" episode for E!, approached and asked if he thought she was a "MILF," the Los Angeles Daily News reported. When the little boy said he did not understand, Richie reportedly replied: "It means a 'mother I'd like to (expletive).'" The boy's father, who was close enough to witness the exchange, refused to sign a release for the clip to be included in the show and lodged a complaint with Bunim-Murray Productions. The parents told the newspaper the off-color remark accelerated the need for a family "talk" they had hoped to have a little later than sooner. "I'm 90 percent mad but a little part of me says, 'Stop being a prude,'" the mother said. "I guess I just don't want my son to grow up that fast."

Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion. Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed. "There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said. "Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices." "South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem - and he's cashed plenty of checks - with our show making fun of Christians." Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out. Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

The Sopranos

After its 21-month hiatus, "The Sopranos" returned to television Sunday night with a bang - one that left viewers yelling at their televisions (I did) and very well might have killed its star. The much-anticipated episode delivered all the drama, violence and intrigue its fans have come to expect. But it was ruthlessly short on introductions. Here's a little background on last night's plot twists, in case you're starting to feel a little Uncle Junior about the facts. JOHNNY SACKS - "Sack" became the New York boss after a tense power struggle with Little Carmine last season - and then was promptly thrown in the slammer during a raid that nearly snared Tony, too. Johnny was a good ally. But with him in prison and Tony either dead or incapacitated, both mob families could be subject to the whims of their more mercurial members. In New York, that's Phil Leotardo. Phil promised, out of respect for Johnny, to keep the peace, but it's likely not going to last. What happened to Hesh might be a clear sign of more violence to come. UNCLE JUNIOR - Somewhere (and you know where), Livia Soprano is smiling. When Tony tried to put the ailing Livia in a nursing home, she convinced Uncle Junior to put a hit out on her son. It didn't work. But what Livia wants, Livia gets - even from the grave. When Tony refuses to admit the obviously batty Junior to a retirement facility, the thanks he gives Tony is a delusional outburst and gunshot to the chest. CARMELA SOPRANO - Tony's long-suffering wife took the lout back on the condition that he'd drop the goomars and give her $600,000 to build a spec house. The house was her one stab at independence. But now Carmela is wondering if there is a happy ending in sight. Despite the expensive presents - nice Porche Cayenne, Carmela - she is still stuck in a marriage with a man of dubious morals. And now her dream home has a stop-work order against it. Seems the house - like Tony and Carmela's household - is built with the wrong stuff. EUGENE PONTECORVO - At the start of last night's episode, you might have asked yourself, "Who's this guy, again?" By the end, it didn't matter. The hapless mob loyalist was a symbol of the toll La Cosa Nostra takes on a man's family and his sense of self. If Tony isn't done for, he'd do well to take Eugene's suicide to heart. Looking forward to future episodes. Last night's really delivered the stuff SOPRANOS fans want.

Natalee Holloway, Part Six

The lawyer for a Dutch youth questioned in the disappearance of a young Alabama woman in Aruba moved on Wednesday to dismiss a lawsuit filed by her parents. Attorney Joseph Tacopina filed papers on behalf of Joran van der Sloot and his father, saying the lawsuit, which was filed in Manhattan, should be thrown out because the case has no connection to New York. State Supreme Court Justice Barbara Kapnick agreed to hear arguments on the motion on May 17. Natalee Holloway, 18, was last seen May 30 leaving a bar on the Dutch island with van der Sloot and two friends. Her body has not been found and no one has been charged. Last month, Holloway's parents sued Van der Sloot and his father, Paulus, for unspecified money damages in connection with her disappearance. Elizabeth Ann Twitty, of Alabama, and Dave Edward Holloway, of Mississippi, say Joran van der Sloot imprisoned and sexually assaulted their daughter and was responsible for her disappearance. The van der Sloots were served with a summons while in New York, where the son gave television interviews about the case. Tacopina's motion papers say the van der Sloots deny the allegations. "My clients and I are sympathetic to the fact the plaintiffs do not know the present whereabouts of their daughter," Tacopina said in the papers. However, he says, "neither the plaintiffs' hardship nor the vast media attention" this case has attracted "should serve to prevent the proper dismissal of this case." The papers say Aruban law must be applied to the case. Joran van der Sloot and brothers Deepak Kalpoe, 21, and Satish Kalpoe, 18 were arrested June 9 on suspicion of involvement in Holloway's disappearance. Joran Van der Sloot admitted he was with the teen but denied any wrongdoing. All were released. Tacopina said Joran van der Sloot had returned to school in Holland and his father was home in Aruba. A lawyer for the Holloway family did not return calls for comment.
